I'm pretty sure that this is the number 1 question in the minds of women who dreamed of acquiring long beautiful hair out there. Well you're in luck cause you've come to the right place. Here are some tips that can maximize your hair growth potential.
Patience is a virtue. Or so they say. What you need to realize is that for the average person, hair growth is about 0.4-0.5 mm/day which translates to half an inch in a month. It doesn't take a math genius to figure out that in one year your hair can only grow as much as 6 inches long. Not to mention that you have to trim your hair every month or so to get rid of split and dry ends. There are however some people who have the genetic gift of faster hair growth. If you're not one of those people then I suggest you stick with good ole diligence, time and patience.
First things first, find out the state of condition your hair is in. Your hair could be damaged due to heat, sun exposure or coloring. Or it could be healthy, strong and shiny. It is not a good idea to grow your hair longer if it is damaged. Before growing out your hair cut of those split and dry ends first. Sure you can still grow your hair long without trimming the damaged part of your hair, the thing is it will not stay long cause it will just break off.
Hair is made of keretinized protein. Adjusting your diet to include more protein will help maximize hair growth. Good sources of protein are grains, poultry, nuts, vegetables, fruits and eggs. Taking vitamin supplement daily is also a good idea. Try to look for supplements that contain any or most of the following, flaxseed oil, beta-carotene, B complexes, biotin, biosil, zinc, magnesium, sulfur, silica and nettle.
Your hair is attached to your scalp, your scalp is on your head and your head is attached to your body. If also follows that if you have a healthy body, you will have healthy hair. Try to switch to a healthier diet. Get more exercise and sleep. Maximum hair growth is achieved when you are at your healthiest. Also try to reduce the amount of stress to your body. Find some time of the day to relax and unwind.
Correct and regular blood flow on your scalp is important. Regular cardio exercising improves blood flow throughout the body including the scalp. Cardio has other health benefits as well. Another way of stimulating blood flow in the scalp is by massaging it with fingertips for at least 5 minutes.
The scalp produces natural oil that is essential for the health of the hair. When you wash your hair with shampoo, this natural oil is washed away. So avoid over washing your hair. Try to skip a day and only use condiotioner instead. Here are some basic shampooing guidelines for the different types of hair:
Normal hair - 2 to 4 times a week
Dry hair - once to twice a week
Curly/Dry wavy hair - once every 2 weeks to once every week
It is recommended that you use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Consider those leave-in conditioner and hot oil treatments. The natural oil on your scalp maybe gross but it does make your hair healthy.
Coloring your hair frequently can cause severe damage to your hair. If there is no way you can avoid coloring your hair, use some the quality dyes which provide moisturizing and better protection for your hair. Henna is a natural product that you can use to dye your hair with a shade of red. If you prefer dying your hair black, try combining henna with indigo.
If you are the kind of person that likes to brush their hair a lot, try not to do it. overbrushing can damage your hair. Also avoid using a bristled brush. When your hair is wet avoid brushing it. Doing so can lead to breakage. Use your fingers instead to de-tangle your hair. Alternatively you can also use a wide-toothed comb.
The environment and the elements can cause damage to your hair. It is important that you protect your hair from these two sources of damage. One of the ways to do this is to wear your hair with protective styles. Styles such as plaits, cornrows, buns, French braids and ponytails. These styles are effective in preventing your hair from rubbing against clothes. Make sure to be gentle enough so you don't yank your scalp and roots. Do not use metal clips, bare rubber bands and hair bands with metal parts as these can damage and break your hair. Alternatively you can opt to protect your hair by wearing a scarf or cap when you are going out. If you are the kind who toss and turn while sleeping, it may be a good idea to consider getting either a silk or satin hair wrap. If you don't like wrapping your hair then consider getting a silk or satin pillow cover instead to minimize the damage to your hair.
